Finishing the tea packaging assignment was one of the greatest achievements for our class so far in 2010.
It was one of those things that just seemed to go on forever, but in a good way. Starting with the 6 thinking hats of Edward de Bono and learning how to apply them to our design work is something I will now use in everything I do. then moving onto the logo design and selecting one which we could carry forward into different flavours and combine it with practical packaging. Then we had to work on the colour ways for the packaging designs that worked with all of our kinds of tea, the logo and would be attractive to the consumer. Choosing a special event that our tea was involved with was also tricky and did take considerable thought and changing of many a-coloured hat. Finally we were to design a package closely related (but not too close) to our original designs.
This is what I came up with, my tea brand name was ‘Mr Tea’, the logo was just the name in Bosnia extended, kerned in a particular way to make it distinctive. The types of tea I chose were black tea, white tea, rooibos tea and breakfast tea – in no particular order. The packaging was to be attractive to the gift and novelty market and to people with a sense of humour, or just want to have something special, nice to have or a conversation piece. The special event was to aid in the research and with support for people suffering from prostate cancer, having a fictional seminar here sponsored by Mr Tea – everyone attending the seminar would receive a special 2 pack of tea in a nifty little promotional case.
Here are the pics I have taken of my packages:

Starting from the first stage of our tea packaging assignment using 6 thinking hats created by Edward d Bono ‘s decision making technique http://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/newTED_07.htm. We too had to create our own thinking hats and wear them while role playing our coloured hats. To the next stage ( really fun bit) ‘The Mad Hatters Tea Party’. Whilst we were brain storming and blogging our tea packaging ideas we were getting onto some yummy cake tasting and sipping exotic teas. Read the rest of this entry »

If there is no limit on the amount of tea that I can blog about, here I go again…
Mr Tea needs one more flavour to add to the collection that I had written about in a previous blog, I did have full intentions of having the black tea as my “special occasion” tea and just using the other three (breakfast tea + the 2 new ones) as the regular teas but I do like even numbers and sometimes just can’t stop myself when I’m having fun. I think it is also great to just do a little extra incase something is not working out in the end and you then have an emergency back-up without experiencing the whole ‘end of world’ scenario. So I now have a range of 4 regular teas: black, breakfast, roobois and white, leaving me to make a completely different package (and flavour?) for the special occasion tea. Last time I blogged about tea I remember I was traumatized by the green vanilla tea experience. Well, I have surged on beyond that to better flavours and darker teas. Read the rest of this entry »

Packaging for Mr Tea’s tea packages is proving to be so much fun, I am starting with the event packaging and working my way down to the not so exciting everyday tea types. The event tea is packaged like a little suit with the tea bags wearing a little shirt and bow tie. I haven’t completed the package yet but will show you the roughs and certainly include final when it finally gets printed. I am holding off on printing as it is all black and I have a little voice in the back Read the rest of this entry »

Vanilla Green Tea is the flavor I bought, I thought it was about time I tasted something to do with the tea I was packaging, and as we are packaging 3 ‘flavors’ plus a novelty package it’s about time I started drinking a bit of tea.
It is warm and tasty, just not the taste I appreciate. To be honest I am not entirely enjoying this drink, lucky I only bought 5 tea bags of the stuff, at least it’s good for me. Just how good for me is the question… back on with the white hat I go… Read the rest of this entry »

Being a lover of coffee I have found myself in a bit of hot water lately with the tea fans in our class while learning about our tea packaging project. I foolishly wondered out loud what the difference between the different types of tea was, to me there is was 3 types of tea – these being normal, floral & green. Well, during our assignment on tea packaging using de Bono’s 6 hats to help with the process (I have had to put on my white hat and research) I have discovered there is more than a thousand different types of tea from more than thirty countries!
This is getting fascinating so I’ll share just the amazing bits of my research with you: Read the rest of this entry »
