A quick challenge we now have to face is the branding of a fictional airline, I really couldn’t wait to get started although I was well aware of the difficulty of the challenge.
First I chose a name from a large list decided upon by the class, cutting the favorites down to three it was a decision between Doka (the Australian word used for move), Opal or Gold I decided to make up my own word and call it ‘Centrau’ for an airline that would travel from the cities to Central Australia, great, I was on my way! Now for the logo design…
That didn’t last long before deciding the name was a bit corny and every logo I came up with looked as though it came from a time long passed. It was the colour choices which also dragged the logo back to the past but it did suit the airline to have ‘outback’ colours. Back on the horse and off I go again, I decided to give Gold a try and have an economically friendly airline, using green and gold as my colours. Ha ha, that only lasted as long as it took me to pop the colours into illustrator and realise it could well be two of the most ‘not go together’ colours in history (sorry to anyone who loves the Australian colours). That was a minor problem, I just had to choose better colours and had firmly decided on two of my favorite type styles combined – Garamond and Bank Gothic, they go well together at least.
The swish I chose only after drawing a million thumbnails and decided to keep it simple, being aware the logo will have to look good giant as well as minute, in 2 colour, photocopied, one colour & printed on all sorts of materials. I have always loved the lines of smokey stuff that comes out of those stunt planes so I tried twisting that around the word in many ways until I came up with a combination of a tick, half circle & edge of puddle-ripple. I liked it.
Tell me what you think as nothing is set in stone and I love to hear your opinions.
