Ok, designing my web page with absolutely everything to do with it totally up to me is not as fun as it sounds. For a start all the really cool effects, like elastic thumbnail menus or CSS animated poster circles are way too advanced for a first time doer. Not to mention that after staring at my stuff for the last two years all I can see is the bits that should be fixed up, or the fact that none of it is really good enough to put on the internet for everybody to see anyway. Then I have the daunting task of settling on a ‘style’ to call my own – I know very well that I will have to live with that style until I redo it, and the way I am I’ll probably get tired of it before the end of the year… It was only a matter of months ago that I was working on my business cards, letterheads etc, (in older blogs you will see them) I’m already ready to redesign them – hmm, wish I could create something I would like forever. Or would that be considered boring.
Here’s a few roughs that I’ve been playing with lately, take a look then leave me a comment to let me know what you think – I don’t think you can upset me… but they are all just the index page views with one button in the over stage, just to see how it would change.
Plain and simple might be the way to go, at least with this you won’t be distracted from looking at my artwork.
I really like the coloured buttons in this one – maybe on a different background, it just seems to be lacking contrast or strength – and is it really about the buttons, maybe I could just use them in some other design then I’ll feel good.
This is the one I did before the top one, still with the buttons but a different background tone and a little more refrained.
The same colour tone as No 2. but no buttons, I like the tidiness of the fine straight lines and they are very much what I am about, I also like the subtleness of the background RR, I am not too keen on the green background, maybe white or very dark will look better. I also am not too keen on the font for the buttons here, I’ve used univers – bold and roman, I could try a serif like Hoefler text.
This one amuses me, it is very not me, both in the colour pallet, the font, the splats, even the layout is too chunky for my liking, I really don’t know what I was thinking. But, maybe it’s good and I just don’t realise. ?
I love the contrast of this, the fine texture in the background, the colour pallet, the strength of the deep blue bar at the top and the font – the only thing I don’t like about this is the boringness of it and it seems to have no style or character.
