Semi-Permanent Conference – Brisbane

Friday 4th of July at the convention centre in Brissie City was a meeting place for all things design, this was part of a week long celebration of Graphic Design, Film, Art, Illustration and more which happens annually in four cities around Australia and New Zealand. I took a few notes during the conference and will share my experience with you now, sadly none of the photos I took turned out well enough to publish but (I hope they don’t mind) I have borrowed a photo of each speaker from the Semi-Permanent facebook site just so I could remember them better, and show them to you. The venue was sold out and we were lucky to get seats together with a good view of the speaker and screen, there ended up being 21 of us and we did walk in a little late. Pop-Out Cards

Various occasions require the subtle beauty of a pop-out card, not many occasions, but when they’re required they are definitely required and there is no substitute for a good pop-out card. In the course I took in 2009 at Kingscliff we did learn about the ancient art of pop-out card making and it’s something I dived into with relish, savoring every carefully folded moment. Yes, I enjoyed it and if I got to spend the rest of my life working for a pop-out card company creating corny pop-out cards for special occasions I would be deliriously happy. Asia Pacific Triennial excursion

Wednesday 31st of March was the day the three design classes from Kingscliff TAFE ventured up to Brisbane to view The 6th Asia Pacific Triennial of contemporary art,as well as Stephen Jones’ Hats collection and a fabulous display of butterflies and other insects from the Butterfly Man of Kuranda exhibition.

The Butterfly Man showed us the wonderful array of Queensland’s beautiful butterflies, beetles and moths as part of the International Year of Biodiversity. This exhibition was from the historic F.P. & A.P. Dodd Collection of Tropical Insects from Australia and New Guinea,  focusing on 28 beautifully arranged showcases from 1917 through to the 1960s.
