Beginning

I found a host, not telling who just in case they are really bad, but they seem pretty good if you can believe all the good things they have to say about themselves. I got me a new domain name too, I’m not sure if I needed to get a new one as the other one still has a few months to go on it I thought I might as well, it was a part of the deal anyhow. So now I’m RobynRandDesign.com I just have to go around & change all the links I have to myself, and I hope anyone else who has links to me changes too.

I’m not quite sure what to do next, I have a lot of help pages and beginner tutorials to watch & read before I start anything. I have to get my account verified before it will let me do anything so I guess there is no rush.

My plans are to begin with the most basic theme I can find, I decided this after looking at so many themes I was getting confused and frustrated at the fact that I couldn’t find a decent one that looked like a web page. The only suitable ones were the really expensive ones, then I realised that the whole purpose of me doing this was so I could learn how to create a WordPress web page myself. Maybe one day I will be the one creating themes for others, and damn it, I’ll make decent ones. There’s nothing worse then looking at a web page that looks like a cross between a blog & a my space page – instant retina ache material & there is so much of that out there.

So it’s the Twenty Ten theme for me, I hope to have it up and running so you can see the changes I make as I make them.

Free Music

Creating photo albums is a lovely job, full of other peoples memories, happy times and achievements.

Deciding to add music to these slide shows and turn them into DVD movies could really pay off for me, the only snag I hit was the lack of available music around. I did come across a couple of fantastic sites that sold the downloads for a reasonable price, the links to my favourite of these are:   http://www.soundslikecafe.com/  (a wordpress site, no less) and http://www.melodyloops.com/music/ . But I really just wanted something to experiment with until I found out if it would be a popular option or not, and if I can actually put the photos to music without it all appearing a little odd.

The solution: open up garage band & make my own!

Wish me luck.

I will be posting album + music if it all turns out ok – and hopefully in not too long a time…

Vote for the book cover please

There is a book cover design competition on at the moment which I thought I’d enter, it is to re-design the cover for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larson. We are not to have it relating in any way to any cover that has been already designed for it – which is quite a few when you google them, and they took all the easy obvious images of girls, dragon tattoos etc.

Well, I watched the movie last Tuesday and really enjoyed it – I would of liked to read the book but time restrictions & too many other things to do are putting a stop to that. The feeling I got from the movie was that of darkness, secrets, forbidden stuff & mystery and I decided to try to portray that in my cover design. I worked on it today and ended up doing three. The first was the one I had in my mind when I began but I’m not happy with it and what I ended up with doesn’t look anything like the one that was in my mind but I finished it quickly and it was a good warm – up exercise for me.

1.

The other two are a bit more like I imagined, and I’m relatively happy with them, I thought I’d share them with the world & listen to what anyone else has to say, then after a couple of days I’ll be able to come back to it and make something I really like. Here are the other two.

2.3. (this one was largely accidental with the colours, but I did intend to make the type look like it will be foiled when printed & I think this has that look.)

Let me know what you think, either in the comments or just leave me a message – I have added many buttons to the blog now so it is easy to share too.

Book Cover Re-Designs

Three books were chosen by me to have their covers re-designed. I really enjoyed reading one of Garth Stein’s books: The Art of Racing in the Rain, so I thought I’d choose his work to re-design the covers of.

After researching Garth Stein on his official website: http://www.garthstein.com/ (which was really helpful) I found he had only published three books as yet, although he has written two plays and one short film. He really was an interesting person to research and I will be checking up on him often to see what he does with his life. I only needed three Read the rest of this entry »

Australia brings in $30 note!

I can hardly believe it myself, but, yes it’s just what the Australian economy needs. How many times have you got to the shops and had to hand over $40 for something that costs $30 and then spend minutes waiting around for your change?

Imagine how easy life would be with the new and easy to use $30 note, no more spending 10 minutes hunting through every pocket for a $10 note, or a handful of change, just to avoid waiting 30 seconds for the cashier to give you change from a 50!

WELL, those days are no more. That’s right, NO MORE!

The new $30 note is not only convenient but it is so attractive you will want to scan it and use it as a screen saver so you can see it for evermore. With its loveable icons features on its themed around the unsung Aussie hero’s of the garden shed: the Hills hoist founder (Lance Hill) and the Victa lawnmower founder (Mervyn Victor Richardson) both who worked tirelessly in their backyard sheds to improve Australia, from the backyard out. Harry Williamson is teaching us to do the best we can, and with his encouragement I feel I am almost doing the best I can.

Well I bet you are just waiting on the edge of your seats to see it, and here it is… yes the most convenient, most attractive, most wanted by the Australian people… the 30 dollar note, as designed by Robyn Rand:

Adobe CS5 Roadshow

The Adobe Roadshow to promote the new CS5 suite was in the city in Brisbane, another student and myself went along to see what they had to show for themselves. It was well presented and organised with all the speakers happy and working to a tight schedule. They kept us entertained by communication one on one with the audience and bribing us to join in by giving away many a rubics cube to people with good suggestions or correct answers. Of course the free coffee was great too, nothing like a room full of designers with free coffee, looking at more than 250 new features that are going to make their work of design, print and production easier, faster and more efficient.

The biggest news of the entire event, aside from all the small but important improvements, for Adobe would of been the release of the new Flash Catalyst which is intended to facilitate the work of designers with regard to creation of interactive content. “From now on designers will have possibility to create expressive Web application interfaces and design interaction without writing code.” It seems to be simple enough for designers familiar with photoshop, illustrator and indesign to transform their artwork and images created in these applications into interactive user interfaces in Read the rest of this entry »
